Stuart Elliott: Having recruited for HR and seen what goes on in this space for 14 years, some of the poor comments I hear never ceases to amaze me.
While strides have been taken in building diversity in the workplace, I am often perplexed when I hear comments like “we’ve got loads of women in the team so a guy would be great” or “an Asian guy would solve a lot of our diversity issues”. This is tokenism at its best, and acts as only a perfunctory gesture towards building a genuinely diverse workplace. On the flip-side, “culture-fit” is often a catch-all for rejecting candidates with the right skill-set for a job. So how do we get diversity right?
