Employee recognition schemes can decrease productivity

Your organisation may be handing out “Employee of the Month” gongs in a bid to recognise top performers, raise morale and to motivate staff into performing better.However, a new study led by a researcher at the University of California, Riverside, has revealed that these programmes may actually be lessening organisations’ overall productivity levels.Recently accepted for publication in the journal Organization Science, “Motivational Spillovers from Awards: Crowding Out in a Multitasking Environment” is the maiden academic study to highlight that such gongs can be detrimental to businesses, mainly because they can upset the status quo and sway views of equity and justness.
