For most HR leaders and managers, making layoff decisions is the most difficult part of their role. Letting employees go during normal times is tough, but amidst the COVID-19 crisis, the task becomes much more daunting and emotionally overwhelming.
Layoffs do not only affect workers. Business leaders also experience guilt and stress of having to be the one who delivers the news. While your heart goes to the people, you have responsibility to keep the organisation surviving. The point is to handle the termination conversation with care and understanding, such that employees know you are there for them, even if the business relationship is ending.
